MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a highly specialised massage treatment using a gentle and rhythmical technique to stimulate the lymphatic system.
The lymphatic system has a vital role in regulating the immune system, as well as transporting nutrients to cells and eliminating waste materials, toxins and excess fluid from the body. A healthy, well functioning lymphatic system helps to strengthen the immune system and defend the body against infection, regenerate body tissue and aid detoxification.
The very light and rhythmical MLD technique also helps to regulate the nervous system, inducing deep relaxation and stress release.
Deep Oscillation Therapy machine maybe used during the treatment.
MLD is beneficial for:

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition whereby consistent swelling occurs on one or more parts of the body, as a result of the dysfunction of the lymphatic system. There are various disorders that can cause lymphoedema, but surgery is a common cause in the developed countries. Because of the chronicity, the condition tends to get worse over time, affecting patients’ mobility and significantly reducing their quality of life.
In the early stages, pitting of the skin is invariably present and the oedema can be reversible. Yet if left untreated, it will continue to deteriorate, eventually leading to an incurable condition. Lymphoedema may cause deformity, functional disability, pain and psychological issues such as anxiety, depression and social isolation. Recurrent episodes of cellulitis are a common complication, having a strong association with chronic lymphoedema.
Types of Lymphoedema:
· Primary Lymphoedema: classified into congenital and sporadic due to a developmental malfunction of the lymphatic system. It usually manifests from birth, but it may develop at different stages in life, such as during puberty or pregnancy, or from injuries such as accidents, insect bites or long plane journeys.
· Secondary lymphoedema: caused by damage to the lymphatic vessels or the lymph nodes by surgery, radiotherapy, inflammation or tumours. It is more common than primary lymphoedema.
The most current effective treatment for lymphoedema is a decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT) which consists of manual lymph drainage (MLD), bandaging, compression hosiery, skin care and exercises.
